Individuals receiving vocational services through Habilitation, Inc. are eighteen years of age or older. The primary goal of the program is to assist each employee to reach their optimum level of vocational functioning, with the result leading to employment in the competitive work force. Provides an integrated environment, encouraging personal growth and independence for each individual. This enables our employees to pursue and strengthen their self esteem, self worth, and pride they will need to work in the competitive work environment. Supplemental Employment Habilitation, Inc.'s competitive employment division provides services to individuals who are interested in being competitively employed in the community. Our job coach assists with education of the job search process, assessments of skills and preferences, and employment maintenance. Customer Service & Sales Habilitation, Inc. operates 3 retail locations: Serendipity, Valley Treasures, & Expressions. Employees interested in working in a retail location receive training on retail operations. All training is individualized with the emphasis on developing a skill set necessary to acquire competitive employment in a retail setting. Food Services Habilitation, Inc.'s Kitchen provides culinary training for employees interested in the food industry. Employees learn food service regulations, how to accommodate to dietary needs, and other skills necessary to work in a culinary setting through the preparation of daily meals for other employees and catering opportunities. Custodial Services Habilitation, Inc.'s custodial services offer individuals opportunities within Avenues locations as well as at sites throughout the community. Employees interested in this career path receive individualized training on all aspects of custodial and janitorial services. Horticultural Services Habilitation, Inc.'s Lessie's Garden Greenhouse & Gift Shop provides a variety of opportunities for individuals interested in a career in the horticultural industry. Each employee receives individualized training on different types of plants and plant nurturing.     The Pennsylvania Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, or OVR, provides vocational rehabilitation services to help persons with disabilities prepare for, obtain, or maintain employment. OVR provides services to eligible individuals with disabilities, both directly and through a network of approved vendors. Services are provided on an individualized basis. The OVR counselor, during face-to-face interviews, assists customers in selecting their choice of vocational goals, services and service providers. An Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE) is developed, outlining a vocational objective, services, providers and responsibilities. Certain services are subject to a Financial Needs Test (FNT) and may require financial participation by the customer. Counseling and guidance, diagnostic services, assessments, information and referral, job development and placement, and personal services such as readers or sign language interpreters are provided at no cost to the individual. Also, by law OVR customers receiving Social Security benefits for their disability (SSI, SSDI) are exempt from OVR’s Financial Needs Test.

Vocational Alternatives: Shadowfax offers vocational training in a variety of supported settings. Two facility based training centers operate in York. The program is designed to provide work experience in an industrial setting to individuals who have disabilities. Classes provide assistance in developing a resume, completing a job application, mastering interviewing skills, and learning appropriate social skills for the work environment. Placement services are available for people who need assistance in finding a job. Once employed, follow-up services are provided to ensure the job experience is successful for the person and the employer. Supported Employment: Employment Specialists help with every aspect of job development in order for a person to find and keep a job. Once the person's job preferences and skills are explored and assessed, Employment Specialists assist them in the job search and interview process. After being hired, Employment Specialists stay on-site with the person to ensure they learn the job. Independent Skills Training Program: . Individual plans are developed based on the needs and desires of each person. Daily living needs for each individual are met by our caring staff. Program activities include, but are not limited to, socialization, communication, motor development and exercise, sensory stimulation, and basic work skills.     Pittsburgh Disability Employment Project for Freedom
    Pittsburgh Disability Employment Project for Freedom provides a business directed training resulting in competitive employment for people with disabilities. Project for Freedom is a 10-week training program followed by a 2-week job shadow/internship experience. The training is focused on beginner to intermediate level computer skills, call center support, job search and professional skills. Students are evaluated for employment opportunities based on both hard skills related to their potential profession and soft skills such as communication, interpersonal skills, work ethic, and leadership. The purpose of this program is placement in unsupported competitive employment. Goals include:
    • Learn valuable customer service skills (NO collections/telemarketing), Windows 7, Microsoft Office, computer security and more.
    • Develop soft skills for workplace success: critical thinking, problem solving, communication, attitude, teamwork and ethics.
    • Gain job hunting skills, develop a resume, polish interviewing and public speaking skills.
