Adult Literacy Program
Adult Literacy Program
The Adult Literacy Program (ALP), operates out of the Kennett Library.

The program provides English as a Second Language (ESL)and adult literacy instruction in day classes, evening classes, and via technology. A unique component is the one-to-one volunteer tutoring. Tutors provide ESL help as well as preparation for testing for American citizenship and General Equivalency Diploma. Please call the ALP office to request a tutor's help, or to become a volunteer tutor.

Move-Up Program is for welfare clients and is funded by the Bureau of Adult Basic and Literacy Education and the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare. The IAC staff conducts intensive literacy and GED classes at the Earn Centers, Job Skill Training Center, Achieving Reunification Center, and Teen-Parent Centers throughout the City of Philadelphia.

Core Education, Employment, and Job Skills Training Programs provide counseling, basic education, GED preparation, intensive computer training, and life and employment skills to high school drop-outs, ages 17 to 21. Participants can receive a high school diploma, job training, employment skills, preparation for post-secondary education, as well as readiness for the world of work.

This program is provided for the elderly during the day, Monday and Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The elderly have a more serious difficulty in learning English than the young adults and thus take more time in the program and the program assists them in preparing for citizenship interviews.

LCH's social assistance team provides individualized workforce development support to our clients seeking to gain new employment or find a better job. This assistance can be accessed by making an appointment to see any member of our social assistance team any hours LCH is open. This service is also free of charge.

- Adult Basic Education (ABE): helps adults acquire the knowledge and skills they need in order to carry out daily responsibilities at home, in the community and in the workplace. Each adult has an individual learning plan based on their individual learning goals that helps guide day-to-day instruction. Students learn at their own pace with support from professional adult educators.
- English as a Second Language (ESL): Non-native speakers of English can build vocabulary, writing, grammar and communication skills by interacting meaningfully with learners from around the world. Free classes are available to permanent U.S. residents.
- Family Literacy Classes: Helps parents get the skills they need to be the first, and most important, teachers of their children. Children and parents learn together through the four components of the program: adult basic education, early childhood education, parent education, and Parent and Child Together (PACT).
- General Educational Development (GED) Classes: Preparation classes to help students successfully complete the five sections of the General Educational Development Test: Writing skills, Social Studies, Science, Literature and the Arts and Math. Instructors will design a specific course of study for each individual and help them determine when they are ready to pass the GED examination. Classes are available at many locations throughout the two counties.
- Workplace Essential Skills: Offers job seekers and incumbent workers specialized instruction to help meet career goals. Multimedia instruction is available via the web, video or through traditional classroom instruction.
-Employer Services: The Workforce Education Program offers employers a vast array of services related to work-based foundation skills. Staff work with an employer to determine employee basic skill needs, develop specialized curricula and deliver targeted instruction. In many instances, public dollars are available to help employers address the basic skill needs of their workers in the workplace.
