Family Literacy Program focuses on integrating the education of parents and children. This program encourages parents to participate in and get excited about their own learning, which impacts their children’s attitude toward education. The Family Literacy Program has four components: - Adult Education: Adults in the Family Literacy Program who reach enrollment status will receive an average of 50 hours of instruction in adult education during the program year. The educational component instructs adults in basic reading, writing and math skills. GED test prep, job readiness and computer literacy are also part of the curriculum. - Parenting Education: Parents who reach enrollment status will also receive an average of 25 hours of parenting education instruction during the program year. - Interactive Literacy Activity: Families that reach enrollment status will participate in an average of 35 hours of interactive literacy instruction during the program year. Children and parents learn together through the four components of the program: adult basic education, early childhood education, parent education, and Parent and Child Together (PACT). - General Educational Development (GED) Classes: Preparation classes to help students successfully complete the five sections of the General Educational Development Test: Writing skills, Social Studies, Science, Literature and the Arts and Math. Instructors will design a specific course of study for each individual and help them determine when they are ready to pass the GED examination. Classes are available at many locations throughout the two counties. - Workplace Essential Skills: Offers job seekers and incumbent workers specialized instruction to help meet career goals. Multimedia instruction is available via the web, video or through traditional classroom instruction. -Employer Services: The Workforce Education Program offers employers a vast array of services related to work-based foundation skills.
