Pennypack Farm Education Center for Sustainable Food Systems - On the Farm
Campers from College Settlement Camp visit the farm twice during their summer camp. They learn to appreciate organic farming and nature at an early age. College Settlement Camp of Philadelphia provides camp opportunities to economically needy children, serving almost 10,000 children each year from Philadelphia, Montgomery and Delaware Counties through its residential environmental education programs and summer residential camp. Pennypack Farm activities include being a farmer, a children's Edible Classroom garden, child-centered farm tours and food-tastings throughout the growing season. Students are introduced to the reality of "where their food comes from" , that is from the soil and the labor of farmers. Students connect the effect that their lifestyle decisions will have on the ecological health of their region and the nutritional health of their bodies.

Pennypack Farm Education Center for Sustainable Food Systems
Pennypack Farm Education Center for Sustainable Food Systems - Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)
Our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program provides organically grown vegetables, berries, herbs, eggs and poultry to families who purchase a season-long foodshare, usually paying in full before May. The 335 families in 2008 come weekly for 24 weeks to pick out their foodshare items. Some items are U-pick, and most items have been harvested and bunched in to units. Families are expected to contribute at least 4 hours of volunteer labor at some activity to support the farm's operation. Community members take satisfaction in regularly visiting the farm that produces the food they eat and take pride in belonging to a community dedicated to supporting ecologically sustainable agriculture and the preservation of open space. Adults and children reconnect to nature while living more sustainable lifestyles. Seniors reminisce about their days growing up on a farm and enjoy sharing their stories with visiting children. While volunteering to help with the farm work, community members can learn about organic farming practices, conservation, and ecological systems at a level and pace appropriate to their age and knowledge. The CSA has a core group of dedicated consumers who volunteer to help facilitate the daily operation and influence the future direction of the farm program. The CSA Program includes a low-income food distribution component, both institutional (shelters, meals on wheels) and individual. We accept USDA Senior Farmer's Market Nutrition Program coupons and WIC Farmer's Market Nutrition Program coupons at our Philadelphia Clark Park Farmers Market stand, and donate thousands of pounds of food to emergency food providers like Philabundance.
