Bridging The Gap (BTG) is a character education / life skills course presented by Salvation Army staff to fifth grade students in their own school classrooms during regular school day hours. The once-a-week course runs for one half of the school year and covers such topics as "anger management" and "empathy."

There are opportunities during the year for family centered events to celebrate their student's successes in the program.

The VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System Heinz Campusâ Community Transition Center (CTC) is an outpatient program that provides Veterans with supportive services and skill-building courses addressing individual needs through small group and one-on-one sessions.

The program was developed to promote independence, hope, empowerment, and confidence in one's ability to manage health concerns while attaining a more fulfilling life in the community.

Initial criteria for participation in this program is VA enrollment with a primary diagnosis of serious mental illness and functioning at an inadequate level in health needs, social interaction, daily living, or community resources.

The program is located at the Heinz campus in the Veterans Recovery Center. Skill courses run on a quarterly basis and are offered five days a week, with veterans utilizing the program by participating in groups directly related to their identified recovery goals.

Coping with Anger is the name for the Anger Management group offered at the Center. The 8-12 week anger management program is based on a cognitive behavioral model and confronts the clients thinking patterns, irrational beliefs and inappropriate behaviors in response to anger.

There are eight modules in the program. Clients are asked to read each module and complete the exercises before coming to group. Participants present completed exercises to peers in class for feedback and discussion. Conceivably clients can complete this program in 8 weeks unless for some reason they are not prepared or their work is not satisfactory. In those cases, the client is expected to complete his work the following week.

The focus is on the clients thinking and behavior as it relates to anger.
