    FRANKLIN COUNTY VETERAN AFFAIRS
Operation Save-A-Vet, Save-A-Pet is a program dedicated to helping Franklin County veterans with service-connected disabilities to lead happier, healthier, and more productive lives. This program benefits the veteran, the dog, and the community. Service dogs have proven to be highly valuable in assisting veterans with all types of disabilities, including, but not limited to, diabetes, seizure disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and traumatic brain injury. Our dogs come from local rescues and shelters, and a few select breeding lines, and are provided with highly specialized training and care. These dogs are then capable of serving veterans with a number of physical and psychological needs. During the process of training service dogs, foster families may be utilized to house and care for the puppies. Selection of these foster families will remain at the sole discretion of the Franklin County Veterans Affairs Office. Foster families will be required to meet all ethical standards, policies, and regulations set forth by the program as well as the trainer. All applications for a service dog will be reviewed by the Franklin County Office of Veterans Affairs. Equal consideration will be given to all qualified applicants. Verification of a service-connected disability will be made through the Philadelphia Regional Office.

The goal of the FOCUS Photography Program is to provide veterans the opportunity to learn the basics of photography and use it as a form of self-expression. Therapeutic Photography is the name for photo-based activities that are self-initiated and conducted by oneself (or as part of an organized group or project), but where no formal therapy is taking place and no therapist or counselor needs to be involved. According to the American Art Therapy Association, art can help combat veterans by allowing them different avenues to express feelings and experiences that are difficult to express verbally. Art therapy has proven to be highly effective in treating the psychological disabilities many veterans face.

Community Support Program - A coalition of individuals, family members, mental health professionals, and other community members who are working together to help adults with serious mental illnesses and co-occurring disorders such as substance abuse live successfully in the community. It is part of a statewide coalition that began in 1984. Through the local CSP initiative, small seed grants to CSP, agencies, and advocacy groups have generated innovative trainings, wellness conferences, special events such as Christmas in July, the annual art show, anti-stigma campaigns, CSP celebrations and the production of a wide variety of literature. Through CSP, consumers have been empowered and have risen to leadership roles. Aging Advocacy - MHA provides advocacy services at the South Mountain Restoration Center to ensure the rights of individuals to receive the most appropriate services in the most appropriate setting are assured. SMRC is the only state owned nursing facility in PA. Community Advocacy - MHA provides advocacy services when community members who need assistance with getting appropriate or desired services feel they have exercised all options available to them. MHA is often able to achieve results through the use of mediation, negotiation or education about available services or applicable regulations. MHA emphasizes helping individuals to empower and self actualize themselves through self- advocacy by providing information, coaching and encouragement.
