Agape - Financial Assistance
Program facilitates local communications between those in need and the organzations that can help them. When resources are unavailable or have been exhausted, financial assistance is provided for heating, rent, utilities, mortgage, car, medical and prescription expenses and other needs.

Lawrence County Community Action Partnership - Vehicle Purchase and Repair
Through this program, persons who are employed and need to purchase or repair a car in order to maintain that employment are provided the opportunity to receive up to $2000 toward a necessary repair or purchase of a vehicle. Case managers work with the individual to ensure that they can afford the cost of the vehicle, its maintenance, and their other household costs as well.

Modest Needs - Emergency Self-Sufficiency Grants
Provides short-term financial assistance to families and individuals who live slightly above the poverty line (and are therefore ineligible for many below-poverty services) but are only a paycheck or two away from a financial crisis.

Modest Needs applicants must meet the following income and employment guidelines:

  • At least one adult member of the applicant's household must be documentably employed at the time of the application; AND
  • The primary (largest) source of income for each applicant's household must be either income earned from employment, child support payments, Veteran's Benefits, or retirement income (including Social Security retirement benefits)

    Modest Needs regularly makes grants to households receiving types of income other than those listed above (Social Security Disability Income, for example). However, in light of Modest Needs' mission, applicants whose households do NOT meet the income and employment guidelines listed above will NOT qualify to apply for a grant from Modest Needs.

    Offers several ways to help local people in need meet and overcome transportation challenges.



    As funds allow, NHCO can provide one-time assistance for Vehicle Ownership or Transportation expenses to those who are at or below 200% of the poverty level and reside in NHCO's service area of northern Allegheny County outside of the City of Pittsburgh.

    Vehicle Ownership Expenses such as vehicle repair, insurance payment to avoid break in coverage, vehicle payment to avoid repossession, gas cards, car seats, AAA membership
    .


    Transportation Expenses such as CONNECT cards for public transportation; Ride share for job interview, to get to a job, or other necessary appointment.



    Vehicle donors can receive a tax deduction. Free pickup or towing.

    Eligibility: The Program applies to Pennsylvania residents who:
    • Are serving on 30 or more consecutive days of active duty with the Pennsylvania Army or Air National Guard or Reserve Components of the Armed Forces (Army Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Navy Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve, Coast Guard Reserve).
    • Are serving on 30 or more consecutive days of active duty with the active armed forces (Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard).
    • Are serving on 30 or more consecutive days of state active duty for emergencies or duty under the Emergency Management Assistance Compact in the Pennsylvania Army or Air National Guard.
    • Are members in good standing the Pennsylvania Army or Air National Guard or Reserve Component of the Armed Forces for a period of one year after completion of a qualifying tour of active duty of 30 or more consecutive days when the financial need is directly related to the member's active duty period.
    • Are former members of the Armed Forces of the United States, the Reserve Components and the Pennsylvania Army and Air National Guard for a period of two years after medical discharge for medical disability incurred in line of duty while serving on a qualify tour of active duty of 30 or more consecutive days when the financial need is directly related to the member's active duty or medical disability.
    • Are eligible relatives of qualified eligible service members in limited circumstances.
