Program that provides intensive rehabilitative services on a 24-hour basis for patients who are severely disabled as a result of injury or disease. Services include a thorough evaluation of the person's abilities and disabilities and the development and implementation of a rehabilitation plan which may incorporate physical, occupational, speech and/or other types of therapies; education about modifications in lifestyle which may be necessary including information about diet, exercise and stress reduction; guidance in using adaptive devices which maximize the person's functional abilities; and counseling for the person and/or significant others to facilitate a positive adjustment to the person's current condition. Inpatient rehabilitation services may be provided by general acute care hospitals or skilled nursing facilities.

Several levels of help paying Medicare costs are available to elderly or disabled Americans at or near poverty. Medicare Part A is hospital insurance which helps pay for in-patient hospital care, home health care or care in a skilled nursing facility following a hospital stay. Medicare Part B is medical insurance which helps pay for doctors' services and many medical supplies that are not covered by Part A. You must sign up for Part B and pay a premium. Call and ask for a local insurance counseling and assistance program. Will help Medicare recipients with questions concerning their benefits.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $57,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.
In addition to VITA, the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program offers free tax help for all taxpayers, particularly those who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to seniors. The IRS-certified volunteers who provide tax counseling are often retired individuals associated with non-profit organizations that receive grants from the IRS.

Provides help to families with emergency utilities and weatherization needs.The program also addresses budgeting and general housing concerns. Counselors may screen for Medicaid, TANF, SNAP, LIHEAP and UESF. Also emergency food cupboard, housing counseling services and rental assistance.

Jewish Family Service (JFS) provides confidential, professional mental health counseling services for families, couples, individuals and groups experiencing a variety of problem areas. Treatment areas include addictions, domestic abuse, depressing, panic and anxiety disorders and adjustment difficulties. Relationship enhancement skills are also provided to improve communication, parenting, self- esteem and general quality of life. Information and referral to community resources are also offered.

The Public Defender is responsible for furnishing legal counsel to any person who, for lack of sufficient funds, is unable to obtain legal counsel in any situation where representation is constitutionally guaranteed. In general, a person is entitled to legal counsel whenever that individual's personal liberty is at stake. This would include capital crimes, misdemeanor and felony offenses, and summary offenses that carry a mandatory sentence of incarceration.
