Students have opportunities to fully engage in client representation under Pennsylvania's student practice rules in the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County. The clinic provides live-client experiences and teaches students the skills of interviewing, counseling, negotiation, drafting pleadings, and advocating before the court.

The Family Law Clinic assists income-qualified clients with cases involving domestic abuse, conservtorships, child support, and child custody, among other family law issues.

The program is one of the first criminal law veterans clinics in the country.

The Unemployment Compensation Clinic focuses on unemployment compensation matters for low-income clients. Students receive valuable training in litigation skills for direct application in their representation of unemployment compensation clients.

Each unemployment compensation case gives students experience in client interviewing, case preparation, direct and cross-examination, application of the rules of evidence, and oral presentation before a referee. All students represent multiple clients over the course of the clinic and therefore have the opportunity to develop and hone their trial advocacy skills.

The Unemployment Compensation Clinic assists low-income clients with unemployment compensation matters including voluntary quit, willful misconduct, overpayment, offsets, seasonal work and eligibility issues.

The clinic gives free legal help to persons, based upon their level of income, who have federal income tax problems or need federal income tax advice. Dealing with the clinic will not affect taxpayers’ rights before the IRS.

The clinic provides free advice and assistance for:
  • Income tax returns being examined by the IRS;
  • IRS tax-collection problems;
  • Tax cases pending before the United States Tax Court.
Working under the supervision of experienced tax attorneys, the clinic’s students assist in all aspects of delivering legal services to low-income taxpayers in disputes with the IRS. Students engage in interviewing, counseling, research, drafting, and negotiation with the IRS calendar and the disposition of the cases taken. In addition to working with clients, students meet for weekly case-review sessions.

SSVF provides comprehensive Supportive Services to very low income Veterans and their families who are currently experiencing homelessness or are at risk of losing their homes.

Resources include case management, housing counseling, legal support, credit repair and financial planning services, and time-limited, temporary financial assistance.

Eligible veterans may receive time-limited financial assistance for rent, utilities, and security deposits. SSVF offers short-term case management that links Veterans with resources within the Veterans Administration and the community with the ultimate goal of stabilizing veterans in housing.
