Big Brothers Big Sisters of Berks County
One-to-One
One-To-One program matches Littles in our agency with Big Brothers or Big Sisters for a minimum of one year. The "matches" get together for an average of 8-10 hours per month (4-hour minimum). Each match has its own unique Case Plan designed to help the Little improve and to provide an actionable plan for the volunteer Big.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Berks County
Students & Mentors Achieving Results Together (SMART)

A school-based mentoring program. It is highly supervised by the professional staff of Big Brothers Big Sisters on-site at participating schools. The target population is elementary and middle school children, adaptable to meet the requirements of a particular school district.
The program works in conjunction with school district officials to improve a child’s academic performance, self-confidence, respect for others & their cultures, and relationships with peers & adults. Mentors can be high school students, college students, or community members (depending on the site).

Oakbrook Summer Reading Program held in the Berks County Head Start Oakbrook Classroom, which is housed in the Oakbrook Reading Housing Authority Office Building. Children who attend 75% of the days will receive a new bike and helmet as part of the Books for Bikes program, sponsored by Customers Bank. Camp Lily Berks is a week-long day camp that provides a well-rounded summer camp experience for children and young adults (ages 8-21) with disabilities. Their camps promise to engage, entertain and educate. For campers ages 8-21 with disabilities, Camp Lily offers inclusive activities that build skills, promote friendships and increase independence. Campers enjoy swimming, arts and crafts, games, sports, music, educational programs and a host of other activities. Special guests visit to teach workshops and entertain.

Explore the fields, woods, and water ways of Shillington Park. Take on the role of predator and prey as they investigate the forest. Catch butterflies, dragonflies, and grasshoppers in the park’s meadows. Answer the question “Who lives here?” as they get their feet wet in the stream and pond. Look forward to a variety of engineering design challenges, Project WILD Games, and habitat exploration. In addition, students will immerse themselves in the wildlife of Shillington Park. Through hands-on inquiry, observation, and research; they will discover what lives in their backyard. Toads, Turtles, and Trails campers will strengthen their relationship with the natural world and create a powerful connection with a local park through nature play.

Come out to Summer Zone Sports (SZS) to participate in a week of fun, competitive, physical activity! Across the week, the activities of the zone will change to address the interests of the participants. Various options for the activities will include sports, such as: flag football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, floor hockey, home run derby and/or slow-pitch softball, ultimate frisbee, kickball, etc. On certain days, the weather will determine the nature of the activity (indoors or outdoors). Each day, instructors will lead students in a warm-up, stretch, rules explanation, competition expectation, and facilitation of the activity. Wear sneakers, dress in comfortable athletic clothing, and remember to bring a water bottle.

From Star Wars to Jaws, music makes the movie! Students will use GarageBand to make their own movie music.

Through this Summer Zone program, students will use loop-based software, microphones and keyboards to record music, sound-effects, and voice-overs for the video clips they select.

Young artists entering grades 6-7 are invited to join Mr. Bjorkquist immersed in clay for six sessions. These two-hour sessions will involve a variety of hand building techniques where student artists can explore a variety of applications related to these techniques making both functional and artistic pieces. Student artists must be ready to be messy and make during this open clay studio time.

Blend a performance opportunity with the skill building to improve any performance. In this course on jazz style and improvisation, team-taught with colleague Chris Heslop, participants will learn how to improvise using scales and modes. Rhythm section participants (piano, guitar, bass and drums) will learn how to accompany soloists and to perform their own solos. Jazz styles will be learned through playing and listening. Students will also learn the basics of jazz performance, including how to get one's own jazz combo started.

Summer Learning Program: Shady Hollow Assisted Riding - Full Camp
Camp to include riding lessons in both English and Western, leading, lunging, round pen, grooming, tacking, bathing, stall maintenance, health and wellness. They hope to squeeze in craft time, games, campfire and or trip to the pool.

Provides a supportive equine environment where individuals with physical, cognitive and/or emotional challenges can experience therapeutic, social and educational rewards.
