COVID-19 Utilities Assistance

PA 211 received a call from an 89-year-old widow who needed $98 in utility assistance. She lives on a small fixed income from Social Security.  Due to COVID-19, she had to stock up on groceries beyond her usual amount so she could practice social distancing and protect herself by staying at home alone. She used her utility money to buy additional groceries and now she is cash-strapped and unable to pay her bills. This was the first time she had to reach out for help. PA 211 referred her to a partner agency that participates in the United Way of Southwestern

Pennsylvania’s EBN-COVID 19 Assistance Fund, which gave her the little bit of help that she needed to continue to live on her own with dignity. The agency also has senior wellness programs so she will be receiving wellness checks going forward.
