AMVETS
AMVETS implements programs for and advocates on behalf of veterans and their families.
AMVETS National Service Officers (NSOs) are stationed at VA regional offices and medical centers and provide information, counseling and claims assistance to all veterans and their dependents in matters concerning education, disability compensation, employment, hospitalization, rehabilitation, pension and other benefits.

Annually awards scholarships to veterans and their dependents.

Automobile donations are accepted through the national office.

  • Must be working at least 25 hours per week regularly.
  • Provide 1 month proof of income with application or 3 month proof of income if you may need financing.
  • Have a valid Pennsylvania drivers license.
  • The applicant must be currently insurable in Pennsylvania (no DWI or no DUI).
  • You cannot have any other vehicle in your household.
  • You must be able to cover the ongoing cost of car ownership (insurance, fuel, and repairs, as needed)
  • Willing to share their photos and story with the public.

As funds allow, NHCO can provide one-time assistance for Vehicle Ownership or Transportation expenses to those who are at or below 200% of the poverty level and reside in NHCO's service area of northern Allegheny County outside of the City of Pittsburgh.

Vehicle Ownership Expenses such as vehicle repair, insurance payment to avoid break in coverage, vehicle payment to avoid repossession, gas cards, car seats, AAA membership

Transportation Expenses such as CONNECT cards for public transportation; Ride share for job interview, to get to a job, or other necessary appointment.



Vehicle donors can receive a tax deduction. Free pickup or towing.

Transportation loan program that provides small loans to pay for a car purchase or repair that is necessary to keep a job or stay in school. Loans are for low-income, employed individuals who cannot get a loan elsewhere and are able to pay a monthly loan payment. Low-interest loans in amounts of up to $8,000 are available for the purchase of a pre-owned car, or up to $1,000 to repair a vehicle already owned by the applicant. Accepts donated vehicles to be sold at auction or repaired and sold to clients. Donors may receive tax deductions equal to the sale price of the donated car.
