The Greater Philadelphia Chapter offers comprehensive support and resources free of charge for patients diagnosed with ALS and their families and caregivers. We strive to provide assistance to patients and members of their support network struggling with issues related to ALS. Our outreach begins with diagnosis. We encourage new patients to register with the chapter to become eligible for our many services. Several times a year, we offer Newly Diagnosed Seminars to help patients and their families gain a fuller understanding of the disease. Patients and their families are encouraged to attend our many recreational and educational outings throughout the year. We also offer resource groups throughout our service region to provide a forum for patients to exchange experiences and ideas. In addition, we coordinate resource groups specifically for caregivers and bereavement support.

Patient Financial Aid Program-Through the Patient Financial Aid Program, LLS is able to provide a limited amount of financial aid to help patients with significant financial need and who are under a doctors care for a blood cancer diagnosis. Family Support Groups-All patients, family members and friends affected by a blood cancer are invited to attend our support groups. Facilitated by oncology healthcare professionals, the groups provide information and support and encourage communication. First Connection-This "peer-to-peer" telephone support program links patients and their family members with a trained peer volunteer who has successfully met the challenges of leukemia, Hodgkin or non-Hodgkin lymphoma or myeloma. The First Connection Program brings patients and their families the opportunity to share experiences with someone who has "been through it" and obtain valuable information on LLS and community resources available. The Trish Green Back to School Program for Children with Cancer-Materials, videos and other printed inventory are available to increase communication among healthcare professionals, parents, young patients and school personnel to assure a smooth transition from active treatment back to the classroom. Patient and Healthcare Professional Education Programs-The LLS collaborates with other healthcare organizations to offer educational programs on the latest disease, treatment and coping information. These programs attempt to simplify the ever-expanding array of information and support now available to patients. Teleconferences and Webcasts-Are offered through the LLS and are accessible via our web site: www.lls.org Information and Resources-Information and resources to assist you and your family can be obtained for the Central Pennsylvania Chapter office. Individual counseling: In individual counseling sessions, the counselors assess a patient’s quality of life issues, enhance a patient’s ability to cope, and improve a patient’s understanding of the disease process and its effects. Our counselors provide emotional support and guidance throughout the treatment and illness. Family counseling: In family counseling sessions, the counselors provide support for children, parents, siblings, and other family members by explaining a patient’s emotional needs and behavior. Carol and Sally provide family members with the necessary tools to offer support to a patient. Support groups: In support groups, our counselors create and facilitate interaction between patients, spouses, adults, and children who are dealing with illness or death. Support groups are formed based on the current needs of our patient population. Bereavement counseling: In bereavement counseling sessions, our counselors, both of whom are certified in bereavement counseling, guide individuals in dealing with their grief. Our counselors help individuals to validate their feelings and to set goals for the healing process. Our support groups are ongoing and usually meet every other week.
