Family Center- Helping Parents Prepare Children for School and Life
* The Family Center provides assistance to families with young children ages pre-natal to 5 years in Berks County. Family Development Specialists help parents understand the development stages their children go through to better prepare them for school and life using Evidence-Based Parents As Teachers (PAT) Born to Learn Curriculum. They work with families on parenting, child development and other issues affecting family well-being. The Family Center provides information on well baby care, infant developmental stages, using The Ages and Stages Developmental and Social Emotional Screening tools, and pre-school and kindergarten readiness. Intensive case management services are offered as needed to families focusing on all areas of family growth. Specialists also help families access other community-based services through the County Assistance Office. The Family Center also works with consumers involved in classroom activities in the GED Program.

S.T.E.P. Parenting Classes- Helping Moms and Dads Become Better Parents
* The Family Center has started Parenting Classes to provide tools for parents to strengthen their parenting skills using the Evidence-Based Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) Curriculum. Classes are offered in the BCAP offices in English and Spanish. Students receive a certificate when they complete the program. Call for dates and times of newly formed classes.

Promoting Responsible Fatherhood- Helping Men Become Better Fathers
* Studies show that children who have a strong and nurturing relationship with their fathers are more likely to be successful in life. The Promoting Responsible Fatherhood Program is dedicated to supporting, counseling and challenging fathers to become strong and positive influences within their families. Fathers may achieve their goals by attending monthly seminars and workshops, and by participating in one-on-one counseling. The Promoting Responsible Fatherhood Program is available to all. There are no restrictions in terms of age, income, marital status, age of children, etc. The Promoting Responsible Fatherhood Resources Center is located in the BCAP offices.

The second type of program consists of "on demand articles" which are placed on our website and available to parents whenever they have the time or need to address certain issues. There is informal education for the parents that goes on as teachable moments arise; issues about development, readiness, realistic expectations, management techniques, discipline are typical areas of information that the Parenting Educators discuss.

Play 'n Share is a discussion/support group for parents of infants and toddlers up to age 3 years. Children play in the same room as the parents. Parents learn information, gain support and have the opportunity to make connections with other parents. Since parental feelings of isolation are so prevalent and a cause for overly harsh disciplinary practices, this opportunity to talk with other parents and the two Parenting Educator facilitator is very significant. Parents choose the topics to discuss; some examples are sleep issues, isolation, eating, social needs of children and parents, spousal support, parent and in-law management.

4) Dads in Training (DIT): Promotes fatherhood responsibility to young fathers; provides case management and educational support groups.

The Initiative partners with other agencies and organizations to provide services to all Lancaster County fathers and will establish new programs as necessary.

Early Head Start services for low-income pregnant women/families with children, birth - age 3, include personalized home visits, group learning activities for children and parents together, family support services and parent involvement in program decision making.

An education and intervention program for teens that focuses on developing decision-making skills, positive outlets for feelings, improved family dynamics, and goal setting, while providing impactful information on substance use, misuse, and addiction, drinking and driving, and the legal, social, and other consequences of substance use.

The Nurturing Parenting Program provides adult parenting classes to pregnant and parenting mothers and fathers.The program offers 4 yearly cycles consisting of 12 classes. The cycles are offered in the summer, fall, winter, and spring. Upon completion of the 12th class, participants will receive a certificate of completion.

Parenting programs provide services to children in their own homes (SCOH) involved, low income and unemployed parents.

The Cradle Pregnancy Resource Center (CPRC) offers counseling and decision-making support to mothers who are pregnant and are feeling overwhelmed by their pregnancy. For those who are still unsure what they are going to do about their pregnancy, the staff and volunteers at CPRC offer guidance and support and information about the choices available to pregnant women and new mothers, and a host of services to assist them, including:

-- Assistance applying for state assistance, subsidized child care, and subsidized housing

Offers a home visitation program that provides support, information, and referral services to pregnant women and parents with children through age 5. Specializes in modeling good parenting techniques and effective discipline practices, child and parent advocacy, educating parents on child growth and development, and working towards family sustainability.

Offers ten weeks of individual sessions aimed at integrating mental health strategies vital to raising emotionally healthy children in safe environments. Parents learn successful parenting styles and gain confidence in their ability to make good decisions.

Evidenced-based parenting program which has curricula for parents of infant/toddlers, preschool, and school-aged children. Designed to promote emotional and social competence and to prevent, reduce, and treat aggression and emotional problems in young children 0-12 years old.
