Family Center- Helping Parents Prepare Children for School and Life
* The Family Center provides assistance to families with young children ages pre-natal to 5 years in Berks County. Family Development Specialists help parents understand the development stages their children go through to better prepare them for school and life using Evidence-Based Parents As Teachers (PAT) Born to Learn Curriculum. They work with families on parenting, child development and other issues affecting family well-being. The Family Center provides information on well baby care, infant developmental stages, using The Ages and Stages Developmental and Social Emotional Screening tools, and pre-school and kindergarten readiness. Intensive case management services are offered as needed to families focusing on all areas of family growth. Specialists also help families access other community-based services through the County Assistance Office. The Family Center also works with consumers involved in classroom activities in the GED Program.
S.T.E.P. Parenting Classes- Helping Moms and Dads Become Better Parents
* The Family Center has started Parenting Classes to provide tools for parents to strengthen their parenting skills using the Evidence-Based Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) Curriculum. Classes are offered in the BCAP offices in English and Spanish. Students receive a certificate when they complete the program. Call for dates and times of newly formed classes.
Pre-K Counts- Child Development Programs for Children Ages 3-5
* The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) is committed to ensuring that all children begin school ready to learn and are ready to have success in their schooling careers, as life-long learners, and productive citizens. The purpose of PA Pre-K Counts is to expand the number of children who have the opportunity to experience a high-quality Pre-K program. The high standards for the program help prepare young children for school and help close the achievement gap between groups of students in the K-12 educational system. Early education through PA Pre-K Counts can open the doors of opportunity for every child to do well in school, in the workforce, and in life. PA Pre-K Counts is designed to offer a high quality pre-kindergarten learning experience to more 3 and 4 years-olds in Pennsylvania, free of charge to families between the income guidelines of 130% – 300%.
Promoting Responsible Fatherhood- Helping Men Become Better Fathers
* Studies show that children who have a strong and nurturing relationship with their fathers are more likely to be successful in life. The Promoting Responsible Fatherhood Program is dedicated to supporting, counseling and challenging fathers to become strong and positive influences within their families. Fathers may achieve their goals by attending monthly seminars and workshops, and by participating in one-on-one counseling. The Promoting Responsible Fatherhood Program is available to all. There are no restrictions in terms of age, income, marital status, age of children, etc. The Promoting Responsible Fatherhood Resources Center is located in the BCAP offices.

The first is live online educational workshops in which parents attend the program in a virtual meeting room in live time. There is a mix of formal presentation, interactive exercises and opportunities for parents to share their stories and ask questions.
The second type of program consists of "on demand articles" which are placed on our website and available to parents whenever they have the time or need to address certain issues. These articles, either audio-based narrated power points or text only, are short (5 to 10 minutes) and cover challenges that parents face as they raise their children.
The advantage of these programs is that parents can attend/learn the information from the comfort of their own homes, accommodating their hectic schedules, and without having to consider child-care needs

This agency takes a "whole family" approach to understanding what the needs are, what barriers may be keeping a family from experiening their "best selves" and help develop a plan to meet those needs. Individuals within a family as well as the family as a unit, gains understanding:
•what STRENGTHS are present
•what SERVICES are appropriate
•how to ACCESS those services
•how to ASSESS what is working
•develop STRATEGIES to thrive now and in the future
This might be a great fit if your family is struggling in more than one of these areas:
• FINANCES - are you in danger of loosing your housing or overwhelmed by bills?
• BEHAVIOR - is your family or child struggling with anger and/or fighting?
• SCHOOL - is your child struggling in school? Either with grades and/or attendance?
• EMPLOYMENT - are you underemployed (not making enough) or just lost your job?
• HEALTH - are physical or mental health issues causing a lot of stress in your family?

- A media campaign in cooperation with the National Fatherhood Initiative with the message that fathers involvement with their children is important
- Case management for fathers and their families
- Programming including:
1) "Foundations of Fatherhood", a 12-week educational support group that covers all areas of fathering, from self-image to anger management to spiritual leadership. Fathers are encouraged to share from experience as they identify with one another's problems and triumphs.
2) "Long Distance Dads", a class for incarcerated fathers, similar to "Foundations of Fatherhood."

The program model consists of four components: (1) Personal visits offer parents age-appropriate child development information, help them to observe their child, address parenting concerns and engage the family in activities that provide meaningful parent-child interaction. (2) Group meetings provide opportunities for families to share information about parenting issues and observe their children in a social setting. (3) Screenings are conducted to provide early identification of developmental delays and health, vision, and hearing problems and increase parents' understanding of their child's development. (4) A resource network helps families identify and connect with needed resources, and overcome barriers to accessing services.
