Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor - "sweat equity" - into building their homes and the homes of others. Their mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.

We offer a “hand up – not a hand out” as each partner family works alongside our volunteers during the construction process and then purchases the house from Habitat without profit based on a mortgage without interest.

Homes are sold to participating families at no profit with no to low interest mortgages. Families are required to contribute sweat equity hours, which are based upon the scope of the project. This includes working on the build/repair site, taking financial literacy and home maintenance classes and entering a mentorship program. Much of the labor and materials for Habitat projects is donated, keeping the purchase price of the homes affordable. Habitat is not an emergency housing provider.

Wyoming Valley Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that builds simple, decent homes to sell to families in need. We use volunteer labor and charitable gifts to ensure our homes are affordable to low income families in Wyoming Valley. Families who purchase Habitat homes invest at least 300 hours of ‘sweat equity’ volunteer labor. Ideally, they work on their own homes by building walls, painting, installing windows or other work related to their skill levels. Many community members also volunteer their time. Some are skilled professionals, many are not. By keeping labor costs down, Habitat is able to keep selling costs low.
