Recreational Activities
Throughout the year The Arc offers a variety of recreational opportunities. Every effort is made to meet the needs of our participants by offering a diverse selection of community, virtual and facility-based activities. We strive to make inclusive options available which lead our consumers to independent leisure skill development. Regularly scheduled leisure choices are offered each week throughout the year. Programs are varied and include dinners, dances, swimming, bingo, arts/crafts, special events and much more. We have a Fun and Friendship Bowling League which meets regularly. For children, the Arc offers a five-week summer camp program. In addition "Arc Tracks" presents travel prospects for those who enjoy excursions to destinations such as New York City, Philadelphia, and Lancaster for shows and shopping. We also experience amusement parks, and sporting events.

Designed to promote independence to all the individuals that it services. An opportunity for individuals with intellectual disabilities to become an integrated and active member community in which they reside.

Habilitation services may be used in conjunction with other hourly services as long as they do not overlap and depending upon an individual’s available funding.

This is a direct service provided in home and community settings to assist individuals in acquiring, maintaining, and improving upon their set goals.

This is an outcome based service. All goals will be in the individuals ISP and Habilitation will be tracking the progress of those goals.

Services consist of support in the general areas of communication, fine and gross motor skills, mobility, personal skills, appropriate social skills, relationship development, creating natural supports, and use of community resources.

Designed to support individuals with intellectual disabilities by providing an hourly service to integrate the individual into their community and work toward accomplishing a set goal.

An Example Scenario

The individuals participating in this program do not attend a facility based program. Their activities are carried out in the community 5 days a week. This program focuses on volunteering and practicing community related skills.

Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired - In Home Rehabilitation
Our primary goal is to help individuals with blindness and visual impairment to live safely, comfortably and efficiently within their homes. Instructors teach techniques for cooking safely, identifying canned goods, freezer items and medicines, managing laundry and housekeeping tasks, and keeping the household well-organized. Staff assists with marking appliances and with evaluating and implementing safety related changes within the home.

Instructors also introduce simple methods for dealing with everyday tasks such as money identification, telling time, and using the telephone. Clients learn new ways to communicate using large print materials, adaptive writing aids, and audio technology. When appropriate, basic Braille may be introduced.

Fundamental orientation and mobility skills and white cane techniques are oftentimes taught so that clients can travel safely in their environment.

Caring is key. Instructors provide adaptive ways to deal with recreational and social challenges that sometimes arise from vision loss. They also help clients to develop realistic and positive attitudes towards living a rewarding life.

A secondary special education program focused on providing comprehensive academic instruction and real-life career exploration, experiences, and training to students with disabilities to best prepare them for successful post-secondary training and education, employment, and independent living. Employment Transition Services - instruction to develop transition portfolios which includes a letter of interest, resume, applications, and thank-you letters.
Practical Assessment Exploration System Lab (PAES) - a simulated work environment that provides students with a scope and sequence curriculum to expose students to a wide variety of career fields and to further assess skills and interests such as consumer science, computer technology, problem solving, process and production, and communication.

Each Thursday after work, about 50 of the clients from our day program gather in one of two groups for fun and learning. The groups are led by a team of volunteers. Some of our volunteers are Handi-Crafters' staff who put on different hats for the afternoon, while others are from the community at-large. Each group has five or six "helpers" as they work through the afternoon's activities. These activities include musical sing alongs; exercising to "Chicken Fat", discovering their artistic talents, playing BINGO and many others. Special events are planned around the holidays.
