Services include adult day care, care management, senior centers, home delivered meals, assessment personal care, and volunteer opportunities.

A wide range of services designed to work with our valued older adult citizens. Our goal is those 60 years and older thrive in the home environment best suited to their needs. Assessment of need is done through our office and we work with volunteers and subcontractors to deliver appropriate service.

  • Home Delivered Meals A meal is provided to functionally disabled, home-bound or convalescent people age 60+.
    • Personal Care Service Provides personal grooming help - bathing, dressing, feeding, toileting and transferring.
    • Respite CareProgram designed to provide relief to the primary caregiver. Eligibility and hours will be determined in the assessment process.
    • Chore Service Minor home repair may be possible when safety and necessary upkeep is required.
    • Lifeline Alert Services Personal response system to help people live independently. 24 hour monitoring.
    • Protective Services Reports of abuse can be made by calling 717-334-9296 or 800-548-3240 24 hours a day.

    • Legal Assistance Offers limited legal help with issues facing older adults who meet income eligbility.
    • Senior Center Information For those 60yrs+, a center offers meals, social activities and a range of activities and wellness programming.
    • Transportation Assistance Rabbittransit has developed a program for those 60+ for specific program and those 65+ for other transportation needs. We can share more info when you call.
    • Tax Assistance Program This free service can address tax issues for most middle to low-income taxpayers age 60 and over.

    Challenges: Options in Aging program is operated by Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Pittsburgh and the Pennsylvania Department of Aging, serving residents of Lawrence County since 1974.     The Area Agency on Aging (AAA) provides for the physical, social, & emotional needs of the senior citizens of Erie County through informal and formal supports that enable seniors to make informed choices, to be safe, to remain independent, and to be involved in the community. A small co-payment is required for some services. These services, provided through the mandates of the Older American's Act, are designed to respond to those seniors remaining active and involved in their community, being cared for in their home where they feel comfortable, requiring placement services, and requiring protection and advocacy.

    Care Management provides an in-depth evaluation of client needs and the facilitation of the most appropriate services and monitors those services and the person's individual service.

    Services Include:
    Home Support - assistance with laundry, light housekeeping, meal preparation, and grocery shopping.

    Meals on Wheels - provides hot noontime meals to predominately homebound older adults delivered by volunteers. Sack meals are available for evenings and weekends determined by the service plan.

    Adult Day Care - subsidized day care which provides a structured, secure environment with daily activities and programs.

    Personal Assistance Services - provides or assists an individual with such needs as bathing (tub, bed bath, shower), washing hair, grooming, shaving, nail care, foot care, dressing, skin care, mouth care, and oral hygiene through a consumer directed approach.

    Home Support - assistance with medicine, personal hygiene, nail care, hairdressing, picking out coordinated outfits, help with getting dressed or applying makeup.

    Home Health - registered nursing services not covered by Medicare may be covered in the home short term and for medication distribution.

    Services for 60 years and older:
    * Older Adult Daily Living Centers provided for persons with functional disabilities. Also provides daytime respite care to caregivers. Nursing services and mid-day meal are provided. Contracts with Landis Homes, Lancaster Generations, Masonic Homes, Moravian Center and Garden Spot Village to provide these services.
    * Home Delivered Meals - Work in cooperation with Meals on Wheels and other sources for homebound elderly persons
    * Emergency Fuel Assistance is provided as a last resort after a caseworker has assessed all other options.
    * Respite Care gives caregiver relief
    * Information & Referral assists persons to identify their needs, link them to appropriate services, and to share up-to-date information on issues affecting older persons. The Transportation Specialist, is also part of the I & R unit
    * Lawyer Referral Program for the Elderly: Clients are referred to participating attorneys who will offer advice on a broad range of legal issues. Initial 1/2 hour consultation is $5; Fees need to be discussed with the attorney for consultation over a half hour
    * Ombudsman Program investigates resident care concerns about nursing homes, personal care homes, and home health agencies
    * Protective Services: Intensive casework for persons who are abused, exploited, neglected, abandoned or who are unable to carry out activities of daily living due to mental or physical impairment, which is placing them at risk of imminent harm
    * Property Tax and Rent Rebate forms are available with assistance to complete them also available
    * Senior Centers offer noon meals and a variety of activities in the following county areas: Columbia, Elizabethtown, Lancaster, Lititz, Millersville, Quarryville and Reinholds
    * Flu Shots are usually offered in the Fall at the Senior Center
    * Transportation to medical appointments and senior centers using Red Rose Access for those who are eligible
    * Offers Health and Wellness Programs to promote healthier lifestyles

    Programs for persons ages 18 and over:
    * Domiciliary Care offers protected community living arrangements for persons needing personal care and ongoing supervision.
    * Long Term Care Unit provides assessments to determine the most appropriate level of care for those needing financial aid for nursing, personal care, and domiciliary care homes. Intensive in-home services available for eligible persons who are at a nursing home level of care and have sufficient informal support.
    * Caregiver Support Program- Casework services and financial assistance with caregiving expenses for persons caring for individuals who are over 60 and are functionally dependent (requiring constant supervision) or between the ages of 18-59 with chronic dementia. Also offers assistance for grandparents who are the primary caregivers for grandchildren under the age of 18.

    Area Agency on Aging Luzerne and Wyoming Counties - Family Caregiver Support Program
    The Caregiver Support Program is a unique service designed for caregivers to provide relief from normal caregiving duties and to reduce stress. The caregiver may choose the type of service needed and be reimbursed through state and federal funding. Examples of services would be personal care, companionship, or day care. If the caregiver needs time for vacation, hospitalization or special emergencies, the benefit may be accumulated over a 6 month period and be used for extended respite.

    The Caregiver Support Program may also reimburse the caregiver up to $500 each month for the purchase of supplies used in caring for the care receiver. The list of supplies includes incontinency products, nutritional supplements, over the counter medication, and numerous other items.
    In addition to reimbursement for services and supplies, there is a lifetime benefit of up to $2,000 for home modifications and assistive devices. For example, the caregiver may have a bathroom installed on the first floor, a ramp for wheelchair or handicap access, or a stair glide from the first floor to the second floor for the use of the care receiver. The cost of lift chairs, tub seats, and grab bars may also be reimbursed.

    Family Caregiver Support Program reinforces the care given to frail family members at home by reimbursing some costs of modifications. The major benefit is that it allows caregivers to choose from available services to provide the desired quality of care keeping their loved ones at home. Family Caregiver Support Program takes a cost-sharing approach. Income-eligible families may receive from $200-500 per month to help with out-of-pocket expenses ranging from respite care, adult day care or in-home services. In addition, one-time grants of up to $2,000 may be give to qualified families to modify the home, purchase assistive devices or consumable supplies to accommodate the frail relative. Approved adaptations might include installing a stair glide, a wheelchair ramp or modifying a bathroom.

Foster Grandparents spends 4 hours a day, 5 days a week at a local Head Start Program, day care center, school, or special institution and gives tender, loving, one-on-one support and companionship to children with special needs.     The National Family Caregiver Support Program (NFCSP) provides grants to states and territories to fund various supports that help family and informal caregivers care for older adults in their homes for as long as possible.     Programs helps to make prescription drugs more affordable for seniors in Pennsylvania. Individuals who qualify for the PACE program pay a $6.00 co-pay for generic medications and a $9.00 co-pay for brand name medications. The PACENET program extends the income eligibility levels a bit further to make affordable drugs available to more people.
