FBMH promotes family unity and works toward reducing the need for out-of-home placement such as psychiatric hospitalizations and residential treatment facilities. A wide range of services are provided by the FBMH team including but not limited to; therapeutic interventions, education and skills building, case management, and family support services. This program is voluntary and time limited to generally not more than 32 weeks depending on the needs of the family. The highly intensive program also offers a 24 hour/day, 7 day/week Hospital Diversion/Crisis Stabilization component available to the families.

Work crew job training is an important service that equips our clients with the skills they need to succeed in the workplace. Community work crews offer opportunities for experience off-site doing janitorial and light industrial work. In 2010 we employed over 80 people on our community work crews in housekeeping and light assembly for local business and government.

Most individuals who come to Handi-Crafters have had little or no work experience. Here they are given the opportunity to learn and acquire good work skills through on-the-job training as they compensate and adapt around their disability. Over 300 people are employed in our workshops. They perform production service work for businesses.

Our workshops can provide you with a range of work experiences. We complete jobs which involve packaging, assembling, heat sealing, collating, and non-industrial assembly. Opportunities are also available for qualified individuals to operate a variety of industrial machinery. Basic safety instruction is an integral part of our work program. Most of our jobs are paid at piece rate. Some of the more specialized work is paid by the hour. Paychecks are issued every other Friday.

Our goal is to provide a safe and secure work environment that allows each individual to develop a worker profile to acquire the skills necessary for success in the competitive job market. Some individuals reach their work potential in the workshop while others go on to seek employment in the community.

The initial step for most individuals entering our programs is a vocational evaluation to determine your needs and our ability to meet them. The evaluation is scheduled after the intake interview and can last from 5 to 20 days. During this time we will assess your interests, aptitudes, achievement levels, work behaviors and skills. We will use standardized tests, work samples and production tasks in the workshop or participation on a community work crew. When the evaluation has been completed, we will meet with you and your team members to discuss the results. Our Vocational Evaluator will forward a written report to your referral source and anyone else authorized to receive a copy.

Social, Recreational and Athletic Services:
Well equipped for a variety of activities, Melmark offers indoor and outdoor pools, a covered riding arena, gymnasium, multi-service recreation center, and interactive playgrounds. Students visit surrounding communities regularly for shopping, exercise, and entertainment.

ACT NOW assists people with mental illnesses who want to find a job. The program provides a 3-week training course followed by a 12-week internship designed to lead to full-time employment.

The Pennsylvania Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, or OVR, provides vocational rehabilitation services to help persons with disabilities prepare for, obtain, or maintain employment. The OVR counselor, during face-to-face interviews, assists customers in selecting their choice of vocational goals, services and service providers. An Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE) is developed, outlining a vocational objective, services, providers and responsibilities. Certain services are subject to a Financial Needs Test (FNT) and may require financial participation by the customer. Counseling and guidance, diagnostic services, assessments, information and referral, job development and placement, and personal services such as readers or sign language interpreters are provided at no cost to the individual. Also, by law OVR customers receiving Social Security benefits for their disability (SSI, SSDI) are exempt from OVR’s Financial Needs Test. Statewide there are 21 District Offices staffed with trained, professional Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors which serve Pennsylvania in all 67 counties. The Hiram G. Andrews Center in Johnstown provides vocational training and comprehensive rehabilitation services to people from across the state. The Clerical Unit’s duties involve receptionist work, scheduling of appointments, outreach, and member intakes and orientation. Computers are available for training in word processing, database development, preparation of monthly newsletters, and research. Additional responsibilities include Database Management, Network Management, Internet Services, Web site Administration and Computer User Technical Support. Finally, this unit is also responsible for the ordering of supplies, photocopying and filing.

The vanAmerigen Food Service Unit’s responsibilities include meal preparation, grocery shopping, menu planning, outreach, cashiering, bank deposits, financial procedures, and operation of food service equipment and maintenance of food service areas. This unit maintains the grounds and garden. The vanAmerigen Food Service Unit also manages the Blue Dove Café. The snack bar offers snacks and beverages to members and staff throughout the day.

Our Education Unit assists members in basics reading, writing, science, current events and math. Some members and staff have been trained as tutors through the Mayor’s Commission on Literacy. Members are currently offered the opportunity to also learn from state of the art adult literacy and GED preparation software. A support dinner is held once a week for individuals who want to improve their educational skills.

The Transitional Employment Unit obtains entry-level, paid employment opportunities in our local business community for Chestnut Place members. Placements are part-time and last approximately six to eight months. T.E. is available to all members and T.E. participants are encouraged to experience more than one placement. Weekly employment dinners are held for all working members. The T.E. Unit provides forums for members to discuss barriers and incentives to work. Members who work in the T.E. Unit assist with the preparation of the material for the discussions at the T.E. dinners, the employment record keeping and statistics and clerical duties within the unit.

The Administrative Unit, in collaboration with other units, coordinates development activities, billing, fundraising, record keeping, statistics, budget development and management.

Operation PAVE (Paving Access for Veterans Employment is a Paralyzed Veterans of America's vocational rehabilitation program, supports America's paralyzed veterans in their search for good jobs and meaningful careers while helping employers strengthen their workforce with hard-working, gifted employees.

Many of America's 44,000 paralyzed veterans are unemployed. Research and clinical studies have shown that providing an individual with a vocational focus is critical to their successful transition to living with paralysis. Access to education and career opportunities is essential to boost quality of life, reduce chronic health issues and improve the financial stability of veterans and their families.

At each, PAVE counselors work hand-in-hand with the veteran, medical staff, PVA's national service officers and physical therapists to:

• Explore career options early on in a paralyzed veteran's medical rehabilitation,
• Assist veterans to find the appropriate educational opportunities, job training, skill improvements, etc.,
• Connect veterans to a network of hiring employers.

Provides comprehensive training and employment services to assist eligible farmworkers to reach self-sufficiency through successful job placement.

Provides services life skills training at agencies and in homes, braille embossing
, orientation and mobility instruction (cane travel), and safety / prevention education programs and seminars. Offers vision screenings in schools, escorted transportation, low vision aids and clinics,
low-cost prescription eye wear, rehabilitation services, financial management assistance, community service referrals, and support groups.

The Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) program helps individuals prepare for or retain employment. Services offered can include but are not limited to: counseling and guidance; vocational evaluation; blindness skills training; orientation and mobility instruction; rehabilitation teaching; vocational and college training; occupational tools and equipment; and, job placement services. Services are based on an individual's needs and choices, and some or all of these services may be needed for the person to prepare for or retain employment. VR counselors work directly with the individual to determine an employment goal and what services are needed to reach that goal. An Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE) is developed jointly by the counselor and customer.

We offer an array of services that support career readiness. We will work with a family to understand and maximize the opportunities for supports through the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation and other private and publicly funded local career readiness programs. We also set up volunteer opportunities with volunteer coaches, which is often the most effective first step. We offer private job finding and job coaching as well as providing those services through waiver programs once OVR supports have been exhausted. NOTE: We are not currently an OVR provider.

Student Veterans of America (SVA) provides military veterans with the resources, support, and advocacy necessary to succeed in higher education and following graduation.

Provides support to 16-25 year olds struggling with a mental health diagnosis. Some of the clubhouse's opportunities include:
- Skill building and resource development (for housing, education, employment, and social)
- Provides support in returning to educational settings
- Assists in experience building and application process for employment. On-the-job support is provided, as needed, with the supported employment program
