Matches eligible individuals with volunteers for friendly visits and/or phone calls once or twice a week to older adults in need. Senior Companions are volunteers, ages 55 and older.

Provides KEYS AmeriCorps members tutor and mentor youth and engage them in service to their communities. Members are placed with local schools, after-school programs, and community-based and faith-based organizations.

In exchange for their service, AmeriCorps members receive a modest living allowance and may be eligible for forbearance on qualified student loans, child care, and health insurance. Upon successful completion they may be eligible for financial assistance for their education.

Creating Foundations is a mentoring program modeled after "Safe Families for Children" in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The goal of making these connections is that they develop into a lifelong support for the young adults in the program.

Volunteers provide non-medical, in-home services to seniors on a short term or intermittent basis to complement care provided by family or friends. Services available include grocery shopping, transportation to medical or other appointments and companionship.

PROJECT HEARTH (Helping Elderly Adults Remain in Their Homes) provides senior adults who are healthy enough to remain independent in their homes with support services, including:
• Professional in-home counseling

• Errand and transportation services

• Light home repairs, and

• Friendly visits or phone calls



The IN-HOME COUNSELING component of PROJECT HEARTH addresses symptoms of depression and anxiety, grief and loss, complicated family dynamics, trauma, compulsive behaviors, family support around dementia and provides empathic support around loss of mobility, functioning and participation in society.

Through the TELEPHONE REASSURANCE PROGRAM participating older adults receive scheduled, weekday phone calls from caring, trained volunteers. These courtesy calls ensure the safety and well-being of senior residents throughout Montgomery County.

Reaches out to those in need with relationship building through friendly visits and phone calls. Does not provide financial assistance to help resolve the need. All services are totally dependent on volunteer availability. Requests are granted on a case to case basis and are always based on the availablility of volunteers.

Assists the elderly in remaining as active as possible and to help them maintain their independence. Provides companions/caregivers in Senior Living Communities including residential, skilled, memory and personal care, hospitals, rehabs, independent living, and doctors appointments. The CheckMates program is a telephone reassurance program. Volunteers (age 60 and older) call other older adults once a week to check on them and make sure that their needs are being met. The purpose of the calls is to reach out to people who may be homebound or isolated and to help connect them with appropriate resources to assist them in remaining in their homes. The South Hills JCC does not have a congregant lunch program but they do have Health and Wellness classes, speakers, and exercise classes.

Those who are not normally homebound, but, due to a short-term illness or injury, must stay home for a limited period of time, may also receive this service.
