VFW Unmet Needs was created in 2004 through a corporate partnership to assist military service members and their families who run into unexpected financial difficulties as a result of deployment or other hardships directly related to military service. Unmet Needs assists with basic life needs such as: mortgage and rent, home and auto repairs, insurance, utilities, food and clothing. Unmet Needs helps meet unanticipated financial demands on our service members' families that can't be remedied through existing means and provides our service members with the security of knowing that their families have additional support here at home.

The financial assistance is in the form of up to $2,500 in grants that do not need to be repaid. All grants are paid directly to the "creditor" (such as the electric company), and not to the individual. Each case is reviewed individually and acceptance determined by a committee.

Children and young siblings of KIAs are sent teddy bears dressed in uniform complete with soldierâs name and dog tags.

Operation Military Kids Camp:
One week summer camp for 100 children of Pennsylvania National Guard members. The 2009 USO Hero Kids camp dates will be determined ( kids of deployed members have priority). This camp is administered through PANG.

Designed to assist low-income individuals pay for needed utility services, pending the availability of program funding.

Administers the following programs:
Ontrack: program is designed to lower a customer's monthly payment while PPL forgives a portion of the back debt upon compliance with the program. Proof of income required. Must not exceed 150% of the poverty guidelines.

Operation Help: For individuals with special hardships in paying their energy bills. Funds are provided by PPL which requires the family be a PPL customer and have an income under the 200% of the poverty guideline. Program requires the family is in an emergency situation and nearly out of heating fuel. Family is asked to provide a co-pay of a $100.00 money order and Schuylkill Community Action will cover the difference charged by the fuel company for a minimum delivery.

Electric deposit waiver program: For those under 200% of the poverty guidelines.

UGI CAP and Operation Share: Help with past due gas utility bills. Inco

Provides help with electric and gas bills that are in jeopardy of being terminated. Service is contigent upon the availability of funding and determined on case by case basis..

Provides assistance with basic needs for electric bills and mortgage assistance (one month of principal and interest), clothing vouchers.

Provides payments to the vendor for electric, water, heating fuel and other utility bills when the individual is at danger for disconnection from the service.

Provides payment of one month's bill to prevent shut off of service. Electric or gas service that has a meter at the location of the service which is read and billed monthly.
